The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial was brought to life by renowned landscape architect Lawrence Halprin and unveiled in 1997. The memorial spans an impressive 7.5 acres, stretching 800 feet along the southwest bank of the Tidal Basin. It features four rooms, each representing one of Roosevelt's four terms in office, plus a prologue room that was added in 2001 to round out the tribute. A special niche in the fourth room is home to a striking statue of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, honoring her husband's last term as president and his pivotal role in creating the United Nations. The six-foot-tall bronze figure of the First Lady proudly stands as a testament to her service as the United States Delegate to the United Nations General Assembly from 1945-1952. A nearby relief depicts the seal of the United Nations, adding depth to the tribute. Neil Estern, a talented New York City artist, crafted this statue in addition to another iconic piece featuring Roosevelt wrapped in a cloak that conceals his wheelchair, with his loyal dog Fala by his side, situated in the third room.
