Human beings were struck by the almost incomprehensible ruggedness of these creatures. Even the crushing force exerted by the deepest ocean depths seemed utterly incapable of causing them harm. Extremely few appeared to succumb to death at all, except through violence, and their burial sites were notably restricted.
