The PT boat, a Patrol Torpedo boat, was a high-speed attack craft armed with torpedoes and operated by the United States Navy during World War II. The Elco Naval Division boats were notable for their length among the three types of PT boats. By war's end, more Elco 80 ft (24 m) boats had been built than any other type of motor torpedo boat - a total of 326 units. The 80-foot wooden-hulled vessels, despite being classified as boats compared to much larger steel-hulled destroyers, were comparable in size to many historic wooden sailing ships. Their beam was an impressive 20 ft 8 in (6.30 m).
