Elbow Engine
grabcad
An elbow engine, characterized by its piston mechanism driven by steam or compressed air, operates via a Hobson's joint-based system. Though not commonly used practically today, it remains popular among hobbyists for its uniqueness. The engine comprises two rotating cylinder blocks at 90° to each other, with L-shaped pistons fitted into both blocks. Pressure is supplied during the upward travel of the pistons and an exhaust outlet is provided during descent. This design, coupled with each shaft having two pistons, results in a low number of moving parts due to the rotational valving effect.
