Fernando Botero Angulo, a renowned figurative artist and sculptor from Medellín, Colombia, was born on April 19, 1932. His distinctive style, known as "Boterismo," features people and figures depicted in oversized, exaggerated forms that can convey either biting social commentary or lighthearted humor depending on the piece. As Latin America's most celebrated living artist, his work is prominently displayed worldwide, including iconic locations like New York City's Park Avenue and Paris's Champs-Élysées. Boasting early claims of being "the most Colombian of all Colombian artists," Botero rose to national fame when he won first prize at the Salón de Artistas Colombianos in 1958. Based primarily in Paris for most of each year, over the past three decades he has gained international recognition for his paintings, drawings, and sculpture through exhibitions spanning the globe. His artwork is highly prized by major international museums, corporations, and private collectors alike. In 2012, Botero received the International Sculpture Center's Lifetime Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award.
