Death, death gods, and human skeletons dominate the themes in Cotzumalguapa art. On Monument 10 from El Baúl, two serpents are entwined with a massive skull. One of them appears to emerge from the nostril. The circular loop formed by one serpent's body (behind the skull's occipital region) may represent the numeral 1. If so, the sculpture could be interpreted as a calendrical inscription marking date 1 Death.
