A pioneering watercraft known as the Ekranoplan successfully propelled itself above water without the need for wheels or propellers on May 3, 1966. Its developer, R.K. Musatov of the Soviet Union's design office 58 NP-13 in Otradnyy, Russia, took great strides with his ambitious vessel that could lift its considerable weight to operate effortlessly above the ocean waves, all without the assistance of a conventional aerodynamic lifting force or mechanical powertrain.
