Ekobots - Beholder 3D Scanner.

Human: I built a Beholder 3D Scanner using threaded rod, and it's incredibly strong without needing a frame. All you need are printed parts, bars, nuts, and washers - that's it! It's an affordable, simple, and elegant design that's easy to print and mount. You can check out the Ciclop by bqLabs for inspiration: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:740357. This project is a collaboration with Grupo Reprap Brasil (http://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/reprapbr) - thank you all! If you want to help me create more projects like this, please buy my designs on Pinshape (http://pinshape.com/users/27920-jsirgado). You can modify the OpenSCAD file if you'd like. I've already assembled the parts into three plates: Plate_Parts.stl, Plate_Body.stl, and Plate_Table.stl. However, feel free to print them separately. Check out the photos and blueprints for assembly instructions. To build this scanner, you'll need: 3D printed parts (see the plates), two threaded rods with an 8mm diameter and 1 meter length, cut into various lengths: *2x 180mm for the x-frame *2x 400mm for the y-frame *2x 200mm for the z-frame *4x 80mm for motor fix *4x 50mm for bearing fix Four bearings to support the table: four model 608 8mm x 22mm x 7mm units One transparent acrylic plate with a diameter of 200mm and a height of about 5mm One stepper motor, Nema 17 with a 20mm shaft: 12v ~1.5a ~3.2Kgf/cm One DC power supply: 12v ~2a ~25w recommended One logic board: Arduino Uno or Arduino Nano One shield SUM for 3D Scanning or similar One motor driver, Pololu A4988 or similar One USB cable with a length of about 2m (computer to scanner) One webcam, Logitech model C270 HD720p Two red line laser modules with dimensions of 12mm x 35mm: 5V 5mw 650nm (industrial grade recommended) Six screws for the motor and gear: 3mm diameter and ~10mm height Ten screws for the table, camera, and lasers: 4mm diameter from 20mm to ~35mm height Lots of washers and nuts for the body: *56x 8mm nuts (optional locking nuts) *60x 8mm washers Nuts and washers for 3mm and 4mm screws Pay attention to these details: There's one nut inside each laser_fix. Two nuts are in the motor_gear. For bearings, use washers no larger than 16mm. The table weight should go directly onto the bearings. The top of the motor_gear is 1mm below the bottom of the table. The camera needs to fit snugly into the camera_fix - don't force it. If your laser is smaller than 12mm in diameter, use a strip of paper to adjust. Consider using my other objects to improve this 3D Scanner: Ciclop 3D Scanner shield (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1154668) and Arduino case (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:319733).
