In the Advanced Course, we learn to simplify and rationalize models obtained through photogrammetry. In this example, the original model (on the left) has been subjected to the following treatments: Mesh Retopology using Instant Meshes. Edge tweaking and exterior boundary regularization. Texture Bake of color, normal map, and ambient occlusion. Error closure in Blender: patched with Boolean modifier and Texture Paint. The result: the original model, 890K faces, occupies 177 MB of memory (plus 9.3 MB of texture). The LowPoly model (on the right) has only 8K faces and occupies 10MB (plus 12.5MB of three combined textures). In addition to its manageability and possibilities for use in recreations, it will function perfectly in Virtual and Augmented Reality environments. The scanned object is a Roman sarcophagus that can be seen at the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos in Córdoba. The model is available for free download.
