Eiger Nordwand 10km

The towering Eiger stands at an impressive 3,970-metres high, a formidable peak within the Bernese Alps, gazing down over Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen in the picturesque Bernese Oberland region. It proudly towers just north of the main watershed and border with Valais, showcasing its rugged grandeur as the easternmost pinnacle of a sweeping ridge crest that stretches majestically from the Mönch to the majestic Jungfrau at an altitude of 4,158 m. As one of the most iconic landmarks in the Swiss Alps, the Eiger's north face towers a whopping 1,800-metres above the resort of Kleine Scheidegg at its base, a stunning testament to nature's unbridled power. Sculpted by the relentless forces of wind and weather, the north face of rock and ice stands sentinel, named the mighty Eigerwand or Nordwand, an imposing giant that casts a long shadow over the valley below. This awe-inspiring wall of ice and stone plunges 3,000 metres downwards towards the valleys of Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen, while on its southern flank lies the vast expanse of the Jungfrau-Aletsch area, one of the most extensively glaciated regions in the Alps. Inspired by a renowned tutorial by Shapespeare, I took my cue to bring this majestic mountain to life. My creation harnessed the power of 30-metre resolution Arc-Second Digital Elevation Model data from Viewfinder Panoramas' exceptional coverage map. Embossed with precision using the Microsoft 3D Builder app, this design embodies the breathtaking beauty and unyielding majesty of the Eiger, a true Alpine wonder that commands our reverence.
