The Eiffel Tower, a majestic iron lattice giant, towers above the Champ de Mars in Paris, France's beloved capital city. Its design and construction were masterminded by Gustave Eiffel, the renowned engineer behind the tower's creation. When it was first unveiled as the entrance arch to the 1889 World's Fair, many of France's top artists and thinkers harshly criticized its appearance, but over time, this iconic landmark has become synonymous with French culture and one of the most easily recognizable structures on the planet.[1] As Paris's tallest structure and the world's most-visited paid attraction, an astonishing 6.98 million people climbed to the tower's summit in 2011 alone,[2] while a staggering 250 million visitors had already discovered its grandeur by 2010.[2]
