It was constructed between 1887 and 1889 to provide the entrance to the 1889 World’s Fair. The fair, or Exposition Universelle, ran from May to October that year, and marked 100 years since the storming of the Bastille – the event which is seen as symbolic of the start of the French revolution. (see details) The Eiffel Tower is made of a wrought iron lattice, designed and built by Gustave Eiffel’s company, from whom the tower takes its name. Despite initial criticisms of the design by numerous leading artists and intellectuals of France, the tower proved such an instant hit with the public that it has remained in place ever since. The tower stands 324 metres (1,063 feet) tall – around the same height as an 81 storey building – and boasts incredible panoramic views across Paris. At the time of its construction, it was the tallest structure in the world. It retained this distinction until the Chrysler Building in New York City was finished in 1929. The tallest lattice tower in the world is now the Tokyo Skytree, completed in 2011 and standing almost double the height at 634 metres tall. 72 names are engraved around the edge of the tower – listing French engineers, scientists and mathematicians to recognise their contributions to the towers design and construction. Gustave Eiffel chose this as an ‘invocation of science’ due to concern about the protest which had been put forward by leading artists suggesting that the tower would be an eye sore to the capital city. The engravings were painted over at the beginning of the 20th century, but have since been restored in the late 1980’s and are now clearly visible again. The tower is painted in a bronze colour, getting progressively darker further down the tower to complement the Parisian sky. The overwhelming majority of the monument is structural, with the only non-structural elements being four grill-work decorative arches, which provided a more impressive entrance to the exposition and made the tower look more substantial.
