The Eiffel Tower, an iron lattice structure in Paris, was designed and built by Gustave Eiffel's company for the 1889 World's Fair. Initially criticized, it has become a global symbol of France and the world's most-visited paid monument with 6.98 million visitors in 2011. At 324 meters tall, it held the title of the world's tallest man-made structure for 41 years until 1930. With three visitor levels and restaurants on the first two, the highest accessible to the public in the EU is at level three's upper platform.
