The Eiffel Tower (/ËaɪfÉl/ EYE-fÉl; French: tour Eiffel [tuÊâ¿ÉfÉl] (About this soundlisten)) stands majestically on the Champ de Mars in Paris, France. Named after Gustave Eiffel, a brilliant engineer whose company crafted and erected the tower. Built from 1887 to 1889 as the grand entrance to the 1889 World's Fair, it sparked debate among some of France's most renowned artists and intellectuals about its design. However, today, the Eiffel Tower has evolved into a beloved global cultural symbol of France and one of the world's most easily recognisable structures. Each year, over 6.91 million visitors climb the Eiffel Tower; in 2015 alone, a record-breaking 6.91 million people ascended to the top. Standing at an impressive 324 metres (1,063 ft) tall â roughly the same height as an 81-storey building â it is also Paris's tallest structure. The Eiffel Tower's foundation measures a massive 125 metres (410 ft) on each side. As the Washington Monument stood no match for its sheer height, the Eiffel Tower claimed the title of world's tallest man-made structure in 1889. It retained this distinction for 41 years until the Chrysler Building was completed in New York City in 1930. Moreover, it remains a marvel as the first to achieve such an impressive altitude. In 1957, a broadcasting aerial atop the tower raised its height even higher, and it now towers above the Chrysler Building by a remarkable 5.2 metres (17 ft). The Eiffel Tower boasts two secondary elevations, ranking it the second-highest free-standing structure in France after the Millau Viaduct. Visitors can dine at restaurants on the first and second levels of the tower. Those willing to climb can scale over 300 stairs to reach the top level's upper platform â Europe's highest observation deck open to the public. Stair access is restricted, however, typically limiting public entry by stairway alone to its two lower tiers.
