Egyptian Male Worshipper

Large-scale sculptures emerged on Cyprus around 650 BC, initially crafted in terracotta and later in stone. Local artists seamlessly merged contemporary Middle Eastern styles with indigenous techniques and materials. The distinctive curls on this example closely resemble those found on terracotta originals. Most large statues were created as images of worshippers intended for shrines. This head was carefully carved near the ancient Phoenician center of Byblos, likely destined for a Cypriot resident in close proximity to Jubayl, Lebanon.
