The Church of Sainte Radegonde's Choir: It houses the tomb of its patron saint, queen of the Frankish people and wife to King Clotaire I. She had established in Poitiers the first female abbey in Gaul, Sainte-Croix Abbey. At the abbesse Béliarde's order, the body of Sainte Radegonde is unearthed, in 1012, and the church is rebuilt after the great fire of 1083. The dedication of the new building, of which only the apse and the first floors of the cloister-porch remain, is mentioned in 1099. The choir was repainted in the 19th century by Honoré Hivonnait in a rather clumsy manner, which provoked Prosper Mérimée's ire as inspector of historical monuments.
