Eggplant (USA, Australia, New Zealand, Anglophone Canada) is a plant species in the Nightshade Family Solanaceae. Grown worldwide for its edible fruit, Solanum melongena is a staple in many cuisines. Most commonly purple, the spongy, absorbent fruit is a versatile ingredient in cooking. Typically used as a vegetable, it's actually a berry by botanical definition. As a member of the genus Solanum, eggplant is related to tomatoes and potatoes. Like tomatoes, its skin and seeds can be eaten raw, but like potatoes, it's usually cooked before consumption. Eggplant is relatively low in macronutrient and micronutrient content, but its ability to absorb oils and flavors into its flesh expands its use in the culinary arts.
