Egg Shaped Cardboard Lamp
thingiverse
I designed an egg-shaped cardboard lamp using laser cut cardboard, Elmer's glue, and an Ikea Hemma light bulb fixture and cord set. The Ellipsoid-SVG and Ellipsoid-EPS zip files contain the 21 laser cutter files needed to cut all layers for the lamps in SVG or EPS format. These sheets produce 38 cardboard rings. The lamp is built around two shapes: a half-sphere for the bottom and a section of a sphere, from its midpoint to three-fourths-point, for the top. I used SphereGen.exe to calculate the diameters of each cardboard ring. The calculations involved setting the cardboard thickness to a smaller value than the actual thickness used, depending on the desired shape. For instance, to create a spheroid that is twice as tall as it is wide, I entered a cardboard thickness that is half of what it actually is.
