In 1596 a powerful Ottoman army invaded Eger, forcing its defenders into submission after a short siege. Following this invasion, the region came under Turkish rule for more than eight decades and served as the capital of a Turkish province. Under Turkish dominance, local churches were converted to mosques, the castle was rebuilt, and additional structures such as public baths and minarets were constructed. After failing to conquer Vienna, the Ottoman Empire's presence in Hungary began to dwindle. A Christian army led by Charles of Lorraine recaptured Buda in 1686, while a similar force starved Eger into submission in 1687. As Turkish control waned, the town began to flourish once more. Catholic bishops reclaimed the region, causing many Protestant residents to leave in protest. During Hungary's struggle for independence from Habsburg rule (1703-1711), local leaders sided with Prince Francis II Rákczi but ultimately faced defeat at the hands of Imperial forces. Shortly after this setback, Eger suffered a devastating outbreak of plague. Despite its difficulties, the population of Eger began to swell as immigrants arrived in increasing numbers. Between 1725 and 1750, the town's population nearly doubled, growing from 6,000 residents to over 10,000 people. To accommodate this influx, new buildings were constructed in a mix of Baroque (and later Zopf) styles. This expansion included notable structures like the cathedral, Episcopal Palace, county hall, Eszterházy College (named after its founder), and multiple churches. Meanwhile, mosques originally built by the Turks underwent transformation into Catholic houses of worship.
