Eftimie Murgu, a prominent Romanian politician, played a significant role in the 1848 Revolutions. Born on December 28, 1805, in Rudăria (now Eftimie Murgu, Caraş-Severin), to Samu Murgu, an officer in the Imperial Army and Cumbria Murgu (née Pungilă), he pursued education in Old Church Slavonic at his village's school. He continued his studies in Caransebeş before attending the University of Szeged, where he graduated in 1827 with a degree in Philosophy. In 1830, Murgu earned his graduation from the University of Pest and went on to obtain a PhD in Universal Law from the same institution in 1834. In 1830, Murgu became involved in a debate with Sava Tököly regarding the Origin of the Romanians, publishing a work titled "Widerlegung" ("The Rebuttal") in Buda. In 1834, he relocated to Iaşi in Moldavia and established the first philosophy course at the Academia Mihăileană. A conflict with Prince Mihail Sturdza led him to move to Wallachia in 1837, where he was appointed professor of logic and Roman Law at Colegiul Sfântul Sava. As a member of the Wallachian revolutionary movement, Murgu's activities were discovered, resulting in his arrest and expulsion. He continued to advocate for national and social reforms in the Banat, proposing a union with Wallachia. However, he was arrested in March 1845 and remained imprisoned until his release on April 9, 1848. Murgu was elected as a deputy to the Hungarian Parliament and sought to establish a Romanian army in the Banat. He actively participated in the Revolutions of 1848 in the Habsburg areas but was arrested in September 1849. In October 1851, he received a death sentence, which was later reduced to four years in prison. Two years after his imprisonment, Murgu was released in 1853.
