Edward II Penny, Edinburgh Castle
sketchfab
Dating back to the early 14th century, this penny was stamped out in Canterbury under the rule of Edward II. The crowned head of the King is barely visible on one side, with the inscription "EDWA R ANGL DNS HYB" engraved in bold letters. On the other side, the phrase "CIVITAS CANTOR" stood out against a plain background. This type of coin was known as a long cross design, introduced during the 13th century to deter people from clipping coins for their valuable metal content. The penny turned up during archaeological digs at Edinburgh Castle between 1989 and 1991. For more details on visiting Edinburgh Castle, check out our website. diameter: 17mm EDIN134 | Rae Project
