Edward II Penny, Edinburgh Castle

This 14th-century silver penny bears the regal countenance of King Edward II on one side. The opposite face showcases a cross and assorted emblems. Mintage occurred prior to King Edward's ill-fated excursion northward against the Scots, who ultimately vanquished him at Bannockburn on June 24, 1314. The inscription, though worn and fragmented, still manages to convey the phrase 'Edward, King of England and Lord of Ireland.' The reverse side proudly proclaims 'Town of Bury St Edmunds.' Unearthed during archaeological excavations at Edinburgh Castle between 1989 and 1991, this coin offers a tangible glimpse into Scotland's storied past.
