Edith Cavell, a Norfolk nurse born in 1865, rose to prominence as the first matron of the prestigious Berkendael Medical Institute in Brussels. When German forces invaded Belgium in 1914, the institute transformed into a Red Cross hospital, providing medical care to soldiers from all nationalities regardless of their allegiance. Edith Cavell's fate took a dramatic turn in 1915 when she was arrested by German authorities for allegedly helping around 200 Allied soldiers evade capture and make their way to neutral Holland. Her execution by firing squad on October 12th, 1915, sent shockwaves worldwide, with news of her bravery and compassion making headlines globally. This poignant memorial is one of many erected in her honor following her death. It features a stunning white marble statue of Cavell standing atop a granite pedestal, situated before a massive granite block adorned with a cross bearing a statue of the Virgin and Child. The pedestal bears an inscription of Edith Cavell's final words to an Anglican priest on the eve of her execution: "Patriotism alone is not enough; I must harbor no hatred or bitterness towards anyone." Sculpted by renowned artist Sir George Frampton in 1920, this masterpiece now takes permanent residence in St Martin's Place, just off Leicester Square in London.
