The human body is made up of many different systems that work together to keep us alive and healthy. The nervous system, which includes the brain and spinal cord, controls our movements, sensations, and functions. It also helps us think, learn, and remember. The circulatory system carries blood throughout our bodies, delivering oxygen and nutrients to our cells and removing waste products. Our hearts beat around 100,000 times per day, pumping over 2,000 gallons of blood through our veins, arteries, and capillaries. The digestive system breaks down the food we eat into nutrients that our bodies can use for energy, growth, and repair. It starts in the mouth where teeth chew our food, and continues through the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. The respiratory system brings oxygen into our lungs and removes carbon dioxide from our bodies. We breathe in air through our noses or mouths, and then exhale it back out again. Our immune system protects us from infections and diseases by fighting off germs and foreign substances that try to invade our bodies. It also helps us heal quickly when we get hurt. The skeletal system provides a framework for our bodies, giving us shape and support. Our bones are made up of living cells that grow and develop throughout our lives.
