Anne Truitt was an American sculptor who worked primarily with wood and stone to create monumental forms that explored the relationship between shape, space, and light. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1921, Truitt studied at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art before serving as a nurse during World War II. After the war, she moved to New York City and began to develop her artistic skills, eventually exhibiting her work in galleries throughout the United States. Truitt's sculptures often featured organic forms that seemed to grow out of their surroundings, blurring the line between object and environment. Her use of natural materials like wood and stone added a sense of tactility and texture to her works, inviting viewers to touch and explore them. Despite her focus on formal qualities, Truitt's art was also deeply concerned with the emotional and spiritual dimensions of human experience. Throughout her career, Truitt maintained a close relationship with the artist Clyfford Still, who became both a mentor and a lifelong friend. She also exhibited her work alongside other notable artists of the time, including Robert Rauschenberg and Ellsworth Kelly.
