In ancient Greek mythology, Echo was a mountain-dwelling nymph named Oread who made her home on Mount Kithairon. Zeus frequently descended from his throne on Mt. Olympus to indulge in romantic trysts with beautiful female nymphs. Hera, however, grew increasingly suspicious of her husband's numerous affairs and began to investigate his extramarital activities. One day, she arrived on Earth determined to catch Zeus in the act, but Echo cleverly diverted her attention with long-winded conversations. Eventually, Hera discovered the truth about her husband's infidelity and, in a fit of rage, placed a devastating curse upon Echo. From that moment forward, the once voluble nymph was reduced to merely repeating the last words spoken by another person.
