In Greek mythology, Echo was a mountain nymph residing on Mount Kithairon, where Zeus often visited her and other beautiful nymphs on Earth. Zeus's numerous affairs with these nymphs eventually caught the attention of his wife, Hera, who suspected him of infidelity from Mt. Olympus. Hera was consumed by jealousy over Zeus's many relationships and repeatedly tried to catch him in the act, but Echo consistently thwarted her efforts with lengthy conversations. Once Hera discovered the truth, she placed a curse on Echo, condemning her to repeat only the most recently spoken words of others forevermore.
