Echo Dot Outlet Mount
cults3d
A sleek, streamlined design for effortlessly plugging an Amazon Echo Dot Gen 2* directly into any outlet. Incredibly lightweight: a mere 25 grams of plastic! Design Objectives A design that flawlessly complements the Dot aesthetic, devoid of visible wires, unsightly face clips obstructing the light ring, and speaker interference. One piece, minimal plastic, and prints without support. A comprehensive search revealed no adapter (3D printed or commercial) meeting these stringent criteria. Design Process Body: The Echo Dot's diameter was measured, revealing a tapered shape (at least for the Gen 2 in my possession). This allows for a snug, compact ring mount that perfectly fits the device, unaffected by printer tolerances. The ring design also ensures unobstructed sound. Power Adapter: The DC adapter required both horizontal and vertical mounting. Initially, I considered parametric design, but then realized it could be crafted as a single piece to accommodate both orientations (tolerance plays a crucial role here, with a trade-off between the adapter getting stuck or being wobbly – if too tight, scale the entire design by 0.5-1%?). Fortunately, the Dot ring is designed to adapt to such changes in scale. USB Cable: The Echo Dot's standard USB cable is bulky, and while I created a cut-out for it, assembly proved tedious. I discovered a short, 90-degree USB cable (this specific cable* comes in a pair – Left and Right handed – both work well, but one leaves the audio port accessible). There may be even better cables available; I'll update the instructions when I find an improved option. Potential Flaws One apparent flaw: the Dot isn't supported at the back, so handle it with care to avoid dislodging it (consider adding a support piece in the back?). I couldn't devise a solution that accommodates outlets of varying heights without making it parametric or using screws, which would compromise the convenience of easy plugging and unplugging.
