Ecaterina Szabo, a renowned Romanian former artistic gymnast of Hungarian descent, was born on January 22, 1967. She dominated the sports scene, winning an impressive 20 Olympic, world, and continental medals throughout her illustrious career. Szabo's most notable achievement came in the 1984 Olympics, where she claimed the all-around silver medal after a fierce competition with Mary Lou Retton of the United States. Additionally, Szabo secured gold medals in three individual events: vault, balance beam (tied), and floor exercise, while also contributing to her team's gold medal victory. With four gold medals and one silver, Szabo emerged as the most successful athlete at the 1984 Summer Olympics. Following this remarkable performance, she led her team to a world title at the 1987 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, where they triumphed over the USSR in the team competition for only the third time in history. In 2000, Szabo was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame. A sculpture located outside The School of Gymnastics in Deva, Romania, depicts Ecaterina Szabo's likeness in bronze. This bust is part of an ever-growing series that honors athletes who represented Romania since the 1978 Olympic Games in Montreal. The School of Gymnasts was founded by Nadia Comaneci and coached by Marta and Bela Karoly. Since 2003, it has been known as The Cetate Deva National Sports College, focusing on female athletics.
