To combat an erratic MakerBot Extruder controller, I implemented a low-profile enclosure housing a 40mm by 40mm 12VDC fan. The side-mount design ensures airflow over the board while maintaining access to the reset button and terminals. STL, G-code, and SolidWorks assembly files are available for download. Printing both parts requires approximately 47 minutes in total (24 minutes for the funnel and 23 minutes for the cover). Assembly necessitates four M3 nuts and bolts, and fans can be wired directly to the controller board or a 12V power supply line. To install, remove standoff nuts beneath the extruder pcb for clearance. The MakerBot wiki suggests this method keeps controllers from shutting down during prints.
