Easy Acetone Vapor Chamber It's the measure of the health of a society if Golden Syrup still comes in tins... If not how are you going to make all those amazing things with the tins* after gobbling up all that yummy, tooth-rotting, goodness? *String telephone, tiny stilts, thingamy-bob container, to name but a tiny proportion of the possibilities. Seriously: If Golden Syrup is no-longer available in a tin where you come from it's a sign that the collapse of your society has already begun! Oh, 3D printing, yes... Some things never go out of date, and the humble Golden Syrup tin is just such an object. So here's how it can improve your ABS prints: Ingredients: -A tummy full of yummy, scrumptiousness -An empty Golden Syrup tin -Acetone -Some thread -A bodkin... yes, that's two old things blessedly forever relevant, even in our digital age. Ok, any sharp, pokey, thing will do at a pinch. -A model printed in ABS that you would like smoother and shinier. Plan A: -Dip your fresh print in the Golden Syrup -Marvel at it's shiny luster -Lick the Golden Syrup from the model Plan B: (Having licked your 3D print clean) -Poke a couple of holes in the tin lid -Loop a length of thread though the holes -Suspend the model from said thread so it's dangling just below the lid -Plop roughly a cap-full of Acetone in the tin -Replace the lid, with dangling model, on the tin -Wait a bit -Go take a look... Hurrah! Nice shiny, smooth model. Don't forget to leave it to air for a bit, untouched, so the ABS plastic has time to re-harden! You may need to experiment with adding extra holes to the lid, or indeed applying a little heat by plopping the whole thing on your printer's *cooling* hot bed, to get the results you are after but... ...only ever put a small amount of acetone in the tin: -You can always repeat the process but you can't un-blob a model that has gone too far -It helps if the acetone has fully evaporated when you are done as the tin will become a convenient drying place for the model. -Acetone is bl**dy volatile and inflammable stuff so you don't want too much of it sitting around. PS Assuming your printer has a hot bed, and you're impatient, you can plop your "Acetone Vapor Chamber" on said hot bed and use the printer's controls to warm it up a bit: -I really wouldn't advise more than 30-35c!!! -Do take a regular look while cooking... the more warmth / acetone vapor the faster your 3D print will turn in to a blob of goo.
