The Enigmatic Guardians of Easter Island Towering above their isolated surroundings on Easter Island stand a mystery-filled array of human statues known as Moai. Over six hundred Moai figures watchful stare out at visitors, posing silently against the elements since their construction around 1200 AD by skilled artists native to Rapa Nui. Stretching between twelve and twenty-three feet high, these sturdy statues bear the weather-worn marks of being shaped from island resources like compressed volcanic ash. Despite appearing heavy, most Moai sculptures weighed relatively little - an average Moai tip-scales at only about four tons. As you walk around them, notice subtle face and hand differences: no two faces are exactly alike! The massive number and placement pattern reveal much about Rapa Nui history – but leave just as many secrets still to unravel in Easter Island's story. Rough estimates say around 15% of Moai have lost their stone topknot - or pukao. In reality, a lot more statues remain undamaged by earthquakes that periodically batter this vulnerable landscape. When viewed collectively, it seems they stare into the horizon where Rapa Nui people once had a distinct ocean trade network. Each Moai's story likely is connected, like strands of yarn within an ancient web woven to convey island narratives. Unfortunately, today these silent storytellers stand mute, guarding their enigmatic histories – as well as hints at one forgotten epoch – in a hauntingly deserted realm now isolated from human footsteps that created it over eight centuries ago. Today many Easter Islanders see these imposing, colossal stone statues differently - they feel an inherent part of island culture; an inherited history etched upon stone that signifies connection to land and their pasts. While each has its unique characteristics like face expressions and body size – there are only four Moai whose lips appear smiling. It suggests the creators did depict emotion and individuality despite making so many in large batches.
