Moai statues, carved by the Rapa Nui people on Easter Island between 1250 and 1500 CE, are monolithic human figures that still stand today. Nearly half remain at Rano Raraku, the main quarry, but hundreds were transported to stone platforms called ahu around the island's perimeter. Almost all moai have oversized heads, three-eighths the size of their entire body. These statues represent living faces of deified ancestors and are considered sacred by the Rapa Nui people. When Europeans first visited the island, they found the moai gazing inland across their clan lands, but most were toppled during later conflicts between clans.
