Blender file included for those who master subdivision and displacement modifiers with textures, UV unwrapping proves to be useful as well. You can obtain free patterns at www.freepik.com with attribution required for example. EggXXX.stl files represent whole eggs while EggXXX_X.stl files depict two halves with a domino joint. Use included domino.stl for printing the (half)domino with the desired tolerance and domino_cavity.stl for making the hole in the model. UPDATE: It seems that printing a whole egg upright with meshmixer + slicer supports although yields an ugly bottom, requires less time with post-processing (sanding and filling imperfections). For Blender: Set subdivision to preview level 4 for working efficiently. Experiment with displacement settings and textures to find what you like best. Bump the subdivisions to 5 or 6 for those who prefer maximum detail and when exporting to STL select "Apply modifiers" on the left side. Then fire up meshmixer > transform > change the dimensions to your liking (I do 55 for long edge to get a M~L sized egg). Now, CTRL+A to select the entire object and SHIFT+R to enter the reduction tool. I find that 80-85% reduction is the best option. Apply, export and overwrite your old file. Now you have an egg, sized properly and not overwhelming your PC with millions of triangles. How to create the "DOMINO" joints. In meshmixer take a domino cavity file and drag it in and "append". Apply transparent shader to the egg so you can see the cavity. Select the cavity from the object browser, orient and place it in the middle where you will be cutting. Select both and combine. Use plane cut tool to slice keeping both halves. Separate shells and export each as an individual file. Print Settings Printer: Flashforge Dreamer Rafts: No Supports: Doesn't Matter Resolution: 0.1 - 0.2 Infill: 10~20% honeycomb Notes: I use Meshmixer supports with slicer's supports if printing whole eggs on an FDM printer to have the most stable option.
