East-European Shepherd A Breed Developed for Harsh Environments Originating in the Soviet Union during the 1930-1950s, the East European Shepherd was bred to withstand extreme climates and serve as a working dog for military, police, and border guard duties. Physical Characteristics The East European Shepherd stands out with its larger size compared to the German Shepherd. Males reach heights of 66-76 centimeters (26-30 inches) at the withers, weighing between 35-60 kilograms (77-132 pounds), while females stand at 62-72 centimeters (24.5-28 inches) and weigh 30-50 kilograms (66-110 pounds). They possess a short coat of dense fur, strong bones, and well-developed muscles. Their head has a 'wolfish' appearance with a long neck and massive collar fur. The muzzle is equal in length to the skull, and the lower jaw is well-developed, featuring large teeth and powerful jaw muscles that enable a strong hold and scissor-cutting bite. Ears are medium-sized and pricked, while eyes are medium, oval, and dark with close-fitting, well-colored eyelids. The back is straight, strong, wide, and long, often 10-17% longer than their height at the withers. The loins are long and wide, well-muscled, and slightly arched. The croup is wide, long, and slightly sloping towards the tail, which is long, bears thick fur, and erects in a sword-like form when excited. The chest is moderately wide, while the belly is reasonably tucked up. Legs are strong and straight, with oval and compact feet that enable a trotting pace rather than a sliding one. Temperament The East European Shepherd is characterized as balanced, confident, and intelligent. They are attentive, active, self-assured dogs that appear calm and quiet but remain constantly alert to situations, ready to 'turn on' at their owner's command. VEOs have an active defensive reaction, distrust strangers, and can be aggressive when needed, but they should never exhibit unmotivated aggression. East European Shepherds excel as police dogs, personal protection guard dogs, or companions due to their intelligence, curiosity, and quick learning ability. They are well-suited for living outside in extreme climates or inside a house or apartment. Their performance as hunting dogs and draught dogs in groups is also notable. Health One of the primary reasons for developing the VEO breed was to eliminate hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia, common diseases found in German Shepherds. Due to their large and open ear structure, East European Shepherds are less prone to ear infections. They live between 10-14 years. Recognition The East European Shepherd is recognized by the Russian Kynological Federation (RKF) and registered with the Dog Registry of America and the Continental Kennel Club in the USA.
