Earthquakes erupt as intense vibrations from beneath the earth's surface when rock masses under tremendous tectonic stress suddenly break or undergo a rapid elastic rebound. These violent events can cause substantial damage. The powerful vibrations generated by an earthquake radiate outward in all directions in the form of seismic waves, originating from the hypocentre or focal point of the quake. The location on the earth's surface where the waves first strike, directly above the hypocentre, is known as the epicentre. It experiences the maximum release of energy and exhibits the most noticeable effects. From this spot, the waves travel across the surface, violently shaking the ground.
