Butter is made by shaking cream obtained from cow's milk. One of the first devices used to make butter was the butter churn. Early churns were essentially containers made from materials like animal skins, filled with cream and shaken until butter formed. Butter churns became more complex over time. The "dasher model", seen on this page, was a popular design favored by North American settlers. In this churn, the dasher (a plunger with an x-shaped attachment) is moved up and down to churn cream into butter. This particular dasher is made out of wood. The barrel is ceramic with a pinkish-gray glaze. Note: The complete scan of the artifact is named "Butter Churn - Baratte.stl". It's meant to be viewed in a virtual environment using computer software. You can try printing it off, but we cannot guarantee the quality. To construct your own butter churn, it's best to print off the pieces individually (Dasher - Batte.stl, Barrel - Baril.stl, Lid - Couvercle.stl).
