I decided to design a custom shroud for my own needs after trying out various 40mm options available. My top priority was full access to the hot end, as I frequently switch nozzles and don't want to remove the shroud each time I make an adjustment. To achieve this, I specified that the shroud should be printed in polycarbonate or ABS. In my experience with other versions of this design made from these materials, I encountered issues with overly thick walls that would flex and potentially damage upon removal or installation. However, this new design addresses those concerns effectively. Following several cycles of removing and reinstalling the shroud, I've experienced no issues whatsoever. To facilitate easy installation and removal, I designed the shroud to cut M3 threads in the holes. If you don't have a drill with an M3 attachment, you'll need one to size the holes correctly for your 40mm nozzle. The shroud's design is deliberately asymmetrical, with the highest end positioned at the top. This layout ensures optimal performance and easy installation. Print Settings: I printed this version of the shroud in ABS (with plans to print the next iteration in PC). I used a 0.6mm nozzle, set my layer height to 0.32mm, and required support material for the print. To achieve smooth results, I positioned the fan on the bed during printing. For your convenience, I've included the S3D factory file with this design.
