E3D Chimera and Cyclops X-Carriage / Improved stability for prusa i3
thingiverse
This remix is of http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:833722 for use with LM8LUU long bearings (4.5cm long vs 2.4cm long) for greatly enhanced stability. A much stronger and more robust holder is also included for the driving belt. Use the mount part from the original design with this carriage, as it is not included here. Four holes allow easy access to the screws to unsecure or secure the hotend from behind like in the original design. For more information about using Chimera/Cyclops on a Prusa i3: http://wiki.e3d-online.com/wiki/Cyclops/Chimera_on_Prusa_i3 This carriage is much lower than traditional Prusa i3 carriages, and on some printers, including my own, the X carriage couldn't go down far enough without cutting slightly into the frame to avoid hitting the coupling with the Z-axis drive screw. It only took a couple of minutes with my Dremel and a tungsten carbide burr. Make sure to adjust the X-stop switch according to your printer; for mine, I glued a small cube on the left side of the carriage because it was easier than moving the switch. It works perfectly and so fast, and I got a total weight of around 150 grams for the entire thing including two print heads. My previous dual extruder mount was about three times heavier, including print heads. I do notice an improvement in quality. Print Settings: Printer Brand: RepRap Printer: Customized Sunhokey Prusa i3 2015 Rafts: No Supports: No Resolution: 0.24mm per layer Infill: 60% honeycomb Notes: The carriage shown in the picture was printed at 0.24mm layer height, three shells, and three layers for the bottom and top with PLA. The mount part between the carriage and heatsink, which is grey on the picture, was printed at 0.2mm layer height with ABS. I was a bit concerned that the heatsink would get warm and soften the part. Note: The model shown in the picture had to stop printing at 95% due to a power outage, and about one millimeter of the belt carriage is missing, but it's working perfectly without it.
