Since 2008, electric rickshaws have gained popularity in certain cities as an alternative to traditional auto and pulled rickshaws. This is due to their lower fuel costs and reduced human effort compared to the latter. Accepted as an option to petrol/diesel/CNG auto rickshaws, these three-wheeled vehicles are propelled by electric motors ranging from 650-1400 watts. Primarily manufactured in India, they could serve as a low-emission transport solution for low-income populations who face transportation challenges.
