Désiré-Félicien-François-Joseph Mercier, a prominent Belgian Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church, was born on November 21, 1851, and passed away on January 23, 1926. He served as Archbishop of Mechelen from 1906 until his death, and in 1907, he was elevated to the prestigious rank of cardinalate. Mercier is renowned for his unwavering resistance to the German occupation that lasted from 1914 to 1918. He received his episcopal consecration on March 25 from Archbishop Antonio Vico, and chose the motto "Apostolus Jesu Christi" as a symbol of his dedication to serving Christ. Mercier was appointed Cardinal Priest of S. Pietro in Vincoli by Pope St. Pius X during the consistory of April 15, 1907. Pope Benedict XV expressed his admiration for Mercier in 1916, sending him a portrait and a heartfelt letter that read: "You saved the Church!" Mercier played a significant role as one of the cardinal electors in the 1922 papal conclave, which resulted in the selection of Pope Pius XI. A large bronze statue of Mercier stands proudly outside St. Michael and Gudula Cathedral in Brussels, commemorating his legacy.
