Considering all these factors and the educational effectiveness of robotics as a valuable tool in schools, MAS CAMARENA, a leading education centre in Valencia, Spain, introduced it into their curriculum. The school is renowned in Valencia for its innovative teaching methodologies, having recently incorporated scuba diving into their sports curriculum. The school had been utilizing LEGO Mindstorms NXT robots as a training platform for their high school students, who actively participated in various robotic competitions like robot soccer and line following. The school sought an alternative educational robotic kit, and it was in August 2015 when they approached Dr Leopoldo Armesto, a professor at Universitat Politecnica de Valencia. This presented an opportunity to create DYOR: Do Your Own Robot, an educational robotic toy kit that empowers kids to build their own robots from scratch. The DYOR kit contains all the necessary tools to construct a simple robot, along with instructions for building the standard simple robot. It comes equipped with electronic components, Lego pieces (compatible with standard technic Lego pieces), and a comprehensive manufacturing guide. The manufacturing guide explains each method (3D printing, laser cutting or molding) with its respective designs and provides a detailed explanation of the methodology for developing each design and its fabrication method. Given the school's interest in introducing simple 3D modeling to their high school students, the designs were simplified. With 100-150 school students and 50 university undergraduates from UPV involved, an efficient production method is crucial. DYOR was developed primarily for reasons of price, ease of use, varied programming options, and the numerous sensors that came with the basic kit. Some of its essential components are showcased here!
