Dvaravati (Olivia Hughes MS 2016-17)
sketchfab
This remarkable artifact is a stunning Daravati grey stone Buddha torso crafted in Thailand around the 7th to 8th century. Although its true purpose remains unknown, statues like this were deliberately placed in temples for worship as poignant reminders of various Buddhist stories and proverbs. As part of an exceptional collection of Asian and South East Asian works of art, this artifact was once personally owned by John Young before being generously donated to the esteemed John Young Museum of Art in 1999. Located on the vibrant campus of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, the John Young Museum is a dynamic learning complex that serves as a hub for artistic expression and cultural enrichment. As stated by its organizers, "The museum is a thriving venue for Asian-Pacific artist-in-residences, art history exhibitions, and student-centered programming that fosters, supports, and sustains museum education initiatives for UHM and the local community."
