No need to simulate anything - just load your VDB data (volumetric information) and you're done, ready to render! You can scale or rotate it easily to fit your scene perfectly. The files are already included with 3ds Max and Maya, with the VDB data loaded using VolumeGrid from VRay. All the shading and lighting is taken care of for you. You can also tweak the look really easily by changing the density, color and shadows, if you have any questions feel free to ask. A VDB file is a volume database file created by OpenVDB, which has been adopted by Cinema 4D, Houdini, RenderMan, Arnold, RealFlow, Maxwell Render, LightWave 3D Modo, V-Ray, Octane Render, and 3Delight.
