Discovered by Dr. David Dunkle in 1867 at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, the Dunkleosteus was named after him. The name 'osteus' is Greek for 'bone,' reflecting its status as an armoured fish with plates encircling its head. 358 million years ago during the Devonian "Age of Fishes," this massive predator roamed the earth. At that time, it was the largest predator alive and reached lengths of up to 20 feet. Weighing more than a ton, Dunkleosteus boasted a skull made of thick, bony plates, complemented by two sets of fang-like protrusions near the front of its powerful jawbones, which were known for their self-sharpening abilities.
