The ancient fort of Dun Deardail likely rose from the earth sometime during the first millennium BC or AD. Its initial archaeological excavation took place in late 2015 as part of a comprehensive project designed to expand our understanding of this historic hillfort and safeguard its preservation for generations to come. Repeated occupation and possible rebuilding of the fort may have occurred over time - transforming it from a Celtic stronghold into a Pictish citadel. The imposing structure dominates the glen, standing out for miles around due to its strategic location. A possible link exists between the fort's name and the Irish legend of Deirdre of the Sorrows. The fort sits atop a prominent knoll on the north-facing slope of Sgorr Chalum, situated on the south-west side of Glen Nevis overlooking the River Nevis at the valley bottom - approximately 300 meters below. Recent archaeological surveys have mapped out the fort's pear-shaped layout, which covers an area of around 1250 square meters.
