Located on the Isle of Lewis, Dun Carloway was likely constructed around 200 BC. Archaeological excavations and historical traditions indicate that the broch remained in use over a long period, albeit intermittently. For centuries, it has been utilized as everything from a pottery kiln to a refuge from raids in the 1500s. Brochs are uniquely found in Scotland and consist of towering stone structures formed by two concentric walls, with a stone staircase spiraling upwards between them to reach the top. There are more than 500 brochs scattered throughout Scotland, predominantly located in northern, western regions, and island territories.
