Dun Ban, Isle of Barra, Outer Hebrides, Scotland. Perched atop a rocky promontory, Dun Ban gazes out at the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. This ancient broch is estimated to have been constructed between 200 BC and 600 AD. The structure's defences are bolstered by a sturdy wall that stretches across the promontory, safeguarding the site from any potential threats. Beyond this substantial barrier lies another enclosure, formed by a line of boulders that appears as a faint outline on the landscape. The broch itself is roughly circular in shape, measuring approximately 18 metres in diameter and featuring an internal radius of about 4 metres. Despite the presence of tumbled stones, which have been carefully removed to reveal the exterior wall, only a meagre height of 1.2 metres remains standing - though some sections appear to be restored. The interior of the broch reveals exposed bedrock, rising above much of the surrounding walls and sparking curiosity about the site's former stature. Was stone theft a contributing factor to its diminished state? OS Grid Reference: NF 6311 0037 Photographed: August 25, 2018 Model created: November 2018 using Agisoft MetaScape (standard)
