I challenged myself to design a 3D printer from scratch. My goal was to get something that works, not to reinvent the wheel. This isn't the full design yet, but it's very close to finished and I'll update this post in the future. I'm printing structural parts on a Monoprice Select Mini, but everything else is from Amazon or local hardware stores. I've also included a file for a jig to splice GT2 belts. It was mainly an exercise for me to switch from AutoCAD 2017 to Inventor 2017 for 3D modeling, and I'm sure someone could get use out of it. List of parts I ordered from Amazon can be found here: http://a.co/iCZZ74D Note: The cover image is only a render of what I've done so far. To do: Power/electronics enclosure, z-axis. UPDATE 3/7/17: I've uploaded revised parts for the XY gantry. After doing some test work reaming out the bearing holes with a drill press, I've edited the pilot holes to be much smaller to aid in center-finding. I've also put fillets on every edge that won't be up against the frame for a more polished look. Press fitting is an excellent way to assemble parts without adhesives or fasteners. Make sure the holes you drill for press-fitting rods and bearings are slightly more narrow than the part going in. The PETG I'm using for this project does a great job of flexing around the parts. Use a flat-faced vice for bearings, and a rubber mallet for guide rods. I also have a set of countersink bits to put a slight chamfer on the linear bearing holes to help them guide themselves in. 8mm rods use a 5/16" drill bit 15mm OD linear bearings: 37/64" drill bit 22mm OD bearings: 55/64" forstner bit 5/8" OD Linear bearings (for the 3/8" vertical guide rods I'll use): 39/64"
