Dubrovnik I Chess Set (1950) - Bobby Fischer's Favorite Chess Set! In 1950, the IX. Chess Olympiad took place in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Sixteen teams from around the world participated, with Yugoslavia claiming the gold medal after 480 matches. Argentina took home the silver, while West Germany earned bronze. A special set of chessmen was created for this event, dubbed "Dubrovnik." The elegant design quickly gained popularity among chess enthusiasts due to its unique and captivating appearance. Academic painter and sculptor P. Poček crafted the design, which received approval from a special art commission in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. Only 50 sets of this design were produced. Most of these sets were given to players at the Olympiad, while a few were sold to the public. In 1992, Bobby Fischer requested that this set be used during his rematch against Boris Spassky on Sveti Stefan. Nikola Karaklajic, the chief referee for the match, borrowed the set from his personal collection. The box was later signed by both Fischer and Spassky. Bobby Fischer praised the set, saying, "Look at these pieces - smooth and light with no hard edges. Beautifully carved. This is the best set I've ever played on." He added, "Feel this knight!" A radio interview with Bobby Fischer reveals his admiration for the Dubrovnik set. You can find the full interview in our gallery. We quote a short part of his comment: "This is the best set I have ever played on. It's marvelous."
